Stomping out into the Digital World, Carving a Tiny Place for Myself

Stomping out into the Digital World, Carving a Tiny Place for Myself

Everything I'm seeming to learn about the digital world is "branding, branding, branding!" "it's so important to have a consistent brand image and message." In this blog post I attempt to start unpacking the creation of my own little brand.

I've slowly been tiptoeing out of my comfort zone from my cozy little position of living under a rock. The digital world is big and scary, with information coming your way at light speed, left, right and center, faster than you can even comprehend. How is it even possible to try and get yourself out there when everything is always so oversaturated with hoards of people screaming into the void online and hoping to hear an echo.

For me, nine out of ten times, getting started is the hardest part of a big project. Once I start I can usually find a trickle of forward momentum for the tasks I need to complete on the way to my goal. But the only way to start something that's seemingly insurmountable is with baby steps. Just start. As Nike would tell you "Just Do It"

Bite 1

I created this Digital Marketing Portfolio Blog so that I could highlight some points worth noting in my Digital Marketing learning journey. And I have written and published a few posts so far in the last two months. This is actually including posts which are spread between two separate blogs I've created in the last two months. This one for digital marketing journey:

Bite 2

And the other is my Plants & Bants Blog, which I have started sharing informative articles I'm writing about houseplants, gardening, and just all things plants in general. I'm a bit of a plantahollic and although I have just started, I intend for this blog to be used as an outlet to share my plant passion with other like-minded people to hopefully create a little plant loving community, sharing tips and tricks.

I haven't made much headway on this blog yet, I only have an introductory blog post and one published blog post with a corresponding link on Pinterest (of a Pin I created on Canva ☺) so I'm not expecting much traffic or interest yet, and instead working on drafts of a few posts at a time. I plan on creating content that is engaging and informative, visually and through text. Hold this space for future updates on all things plants and blogs.

So two big achievements started. Two footsteps in in the proverbial door.

Bite 3

I created a Pinterest account. I also created a Canva account and have been teaching myself how to use it to make all kinds of different ad creative type content, including pins for Pinterest. I have designed three pins in Canva and posted them on my Pinterest account to date, and have even had a few views on each.

Bite 4

Today I started creating a Linked In account. Having a professional profile is an important way to create networks within the professional realm of digital marketing. I have never used Linked In before, so I have a few things still to learn and ideally need to spend a chunk of time getting used to the website features, and adding as much as possible about my job experience and skills, especially highlighting my managerial experience.

Bite 5

I also created a Link Tree account. Of course, I was itching to create a Link Tree for no other reason than trees are awesome and I was picturing a digital tree with leaves of different links, fluttering in the proverbial breeze, and immediately wanted to sign up. I don't want to lose track of where I'm sending out all my new digital feelers. If I want to grow an online presence successfully, then I need to make sure I am as organized as possible and have all of my "leaves" in one place. Since I love plants this even goes with my theme so I'm here for it. I will continue refining my Link Tree and add more to it as I go. Once completed, it's an easy way to make sure I can share all of my important links at one time to those I want to share with, kind of like a digital business card if you will.

Bite 6

Lastly, I am now writing this blog to keep track of my recent progress by compiling some baby steps (or small bites) in one place. When getting immersed in a big, intense project, it's all to easy to forget the little victories along the way. In the future I will read this blog, and I hope to be able to reassess how things are for my future self, and note how far I've come since the start. Today's documentation is a snapshot in the timeline.

Next Bites

I don't know much about analytics. I have much to learn about SEO and attracting traffic to my website. I have lots of practice to do to hone the skills I've begun learning. There are so many different areas of digital marketing and growing a brand online I have still yet to explore. But I'm closer to my goals now than when I started.

All I can do is keep taking little bites with my goals in mind and take things one step at a time. One foot in front of the other to eventually reach a destination where I can look back, recognize the skills I've learned, the visual and written content I have created, and though it might sound cheesy, to validate my journey and keep fueling that momentum. This could potentially be the "before" to a successful future "after".
